May you live in interesting times

This supposed ancient Chinese curse seems to be in full force again for the summer of 2010.

Much of the country is sweltering in 100° heat (welcome to Memphis, y’all), the global economic recovery has slowed, the European Union is fractured, the tragedy in the gulf has yet to be resolved, and equity markets around world have pulled back from recent highs.

If you get all your information watching the news or listening to talk radio, it is easy to become convinced that the world as we know it will be ending shortly (and in the mean time you should buy some gold). There are, however, some reasons to be hopeful. The video below is a fascinating 9 minute presentation by Ray Kurzweil, an inventor and author, who sees a bright future based on the fact that technology, which progresses at an exponential rate, will provide solutions for our most pressing long-term problems.

Now, if he could only fix the oil leak.
